Oaks Day Fashions on the Field Finals – Fifties Style

November 6, 2010

It felt a bit like deja vu yesterday as I sat down with my coffee and started flicking through my newspaper.

On seeing Jaydee Paino here I immediately thought, I’ve seen you before.  And I had! Jaydee is in the picture of the Brisbane Fashions of the Field finalists that I posted on Thursday with Amy Jones.

Jaydee is a nurse from Cairns and bought her dress, a horse print frock, online from a seller in Nashville, Tennessee for just $18.  When she got it home she completely remade the garment, lining it with silk.

It is stunning and it is no wonder that she wowed the judges who included Vogue editor Kirstie Clements, and Jerry Hall.  Jaydee will now take home $100,000 in prizes, which includes an enviable $5,000 shopping spree at Myer!

Jaydee’s dress is very much in the style of 50’s rock n roll era.  The vintage look inspired by the Mad Men series and the desire for female fashion to celebrate the female figure in a more elegant nature has seen so many looks from the 40’s and 50’s appear on catwalks around the world.

Oaks Day Fashion on the Field Finals proved no different and Jaydee wasn’t alone in her attire.  The other finalists displayed a gorgeous range of late forties ‘Dior’ New Look full skirts with pinched waists and dipped hats, tailored pencil skirt suits to just below the knee and even a full shorter skirt with horses galloping on it, similar to a poodle skirt.

But don’t take my word for it, see the video here on The Age.
