Hippie Fashion is in the Zone

December 13, 2011

Hippie Fashion can never go out of trend. It’s hip, it’s cool and it’s comfortable.

So how can we exactly define ‘hippie’ fashion? It can be considered hippie if it has anything to do with flowers, flared bottoms, big rings, head bands, fringes, beads, long hair, ankle bells, feathers, and floppy hats.

It is a relaxed yet creative fashion statement. But being a hippie is not only defined by what you are wearing, but it also has a lot to do with attitude and personality. Behind the fashionable clothes shall exude a personality of being carefree, having fun, being independent and free.

But where does the hippie subculture originate? It was originally a youth movement which originated in the United States during the mid-1960s. The hippies wanted freedom, and they were against the society which was becoming toxic and repressive.

The hippies made their fashion statement. The style of hippie clothing is most often than not loose in nature, and is made of natural fiber like cotton and hemp. Creative accessories were worn together with their beautiful yet comfortable outfit. Hippies usually have long, fussy-styled hair with head bands wrapped around their head.

The hippie wardrobe essentials include hip hugger bell-bottom jeans, usually with fringe at the ankle and flower patches, peasant blouses, t-shirts, or just a skimpy halter top. Accessories were hand-made, and a lot of them included peace symbols.

Women wore skirts and dresses which were either very short, or very long. Micro-mini skirts were worn with suede knee-high boots or leather sandals, depending on the weather. Dresses were both short and fitting, or long, loose peasant or granny dresses.

Other than floral and tie-dyed patterns, there are also several patterns which are part of the hippie culture. This includes psychedelic designs, op art, paisley patterns, and stripes. Flowers were basic representations for peace and love which is embodied by hippies. That is why flowers were present in almost all elements of a hippie outfit.

Hippie fashion will never go out of style. It is a primary fashion statement which exemplifies freedom and love. So remember, if you choose to wear a hippie outfit, a personality that matches it will really create the modern hippie look you want.
