Time for Flip-flops

May 10, 2012

FLIP-FLOPS: “chappal” for Hindu,” zories” or thongs along US east Coast, “jandal” in New Zealand, thongs in Australia,” plakkies” and slip-slops in South Africa, go-aheads in the south Pacific,” Chinelo” in Brazil,” tsinelas” in the Philippines, slippers in Hawaii, “sayonares” in Greece, japonki in Poland, “vietnamki” in Russia and Ukraine. Whatever it is called, it all refers to that thin rubber sole with two straps running in a Y shape from the sides of the feet to the gap between the big toe and the rest.

The Do’s and Don’ts of wearing one:

1. If its summer and you want your feet to take a breather, it’s just perfect.
2. It should extend just past your heel. It is important that you fit it first when getting a pair.
3. If possible, replace it every summer for a fresh set and not wear one that shows the over beating of the sun.
4. Clean it for longer use. Wipe with clean, damp cloth after every use.
5. Heeled flipflops can look great in dressier outfits.
6. To look more fashionable, dress up your thongs, like put some beads on it or some precious stone.
7. Bringing it to the office is a big NO-No. It’s a place of business, not your own backyard.
8. Choose a pair that you are comfortable slipping on, and not burden yourself with its many straps, that’s why its called a “slip-on”
9. Flip-flops are great footwear, but limit its use. Wearing slippers for too long can also lead to some orthotic problems like over pronation.
10. Dont show off your feet when it’s better covered up. Wear your slippers when you are ready, like after a pedicure or you just trimmed your toe nails.

I love, love, love flip flops!!! I have every color imaginable in my closet. I have to agree with replacing them each season if they show wear or fading. My only regret is that its not summer all the time where I live. For those interested, I found a great website called They have a lot of styles and color choices available and their prices are very reasonable.

    Flip Flop Crazy!
